PROJECT
To build a Home Center to support Orphans and Vulnerable Children’s in Kiserian, Kajiado County, Kenya.
PROJECT BENEFICIARIES: ORPHANS AND VULNERABLE CHILDREN
STATEMENT PROBLEM
OVCs are often confronted with immense psychological and social problems. They are vulnerable to harassment and violence, economic and social abuse, starvation, labour markets at very young age, sexual abuse, exploitation and possible HIV/AIDS infections due to lack of care and give support protection. These risks and vulnerability seriously affects their growth and are likely to harm their future and livelihood. Children under this category experience extreme poverty, which is compounded household, community and national poverty.
Polygamous families(six to eight members) with poverty, have increased the difficulty of providing adequate public services such as education, health and housing for families, especially for children. Poor health reduces the productive capacity of households and limits children’s access to their basic needs.
In Kenya, it is estimated that there are approximately 3.6 million children aged Infancy – 18 years who have been orphaned or who are vulnerable. Special attention should be paid to OVC to prevent further vulnerability and ensure their well-being and development as they transition into adulthood.
It has been estimated that 1.1 million, or 44%, of these children have been orphaned due to HIV/AIDS having lost either 1 or both of their parents to the disease. With an HIV prevalence of 5.6% among adults and antiretroviral therapy (ART) being taken by 61% of people who are clinically eligible, the number of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) will likely continue to increase well into the future particularly as AIDS remains the leading cause of death of adults in Kenya. Vulnerable children with HIV-infected parents were significantly less likely to attend school compared with children of HIV-uninfected parents.
A sustained commitment to protecting and improving the lives OVCs is required so as to ensure their needs are addressed so that they can also live their lives to the fullest like other children across the country.
The challenge of Abba Children’s Home Foundation is fundraising for 100,000,000ksh (1,000,000$) to facilitate setting up of an orphanage center and a school to alleviate the prevailing problems and poor care of OVCs who’s number is big and is increasing constantly.
